ABOUT MARCUS
Two decades of residential design experience
Marcus Betts is the founder and Director of Bettswhite.
With approximately 20 years of experience in residential design, Marcus has worked on hundreds of renovations, extensions and new homes throughout Sydney.
Before establishing Bettswhite, Marcus spent 18 years working within one of Sydney's established residential renovation and addition practices. During this time, he progressed from design and sales through to Lead Designer, managing a design team and working across hundreds of residential projects.
This experience covered the complete renovation process — from the initial consultation and concept design through DA and CDC approvals, construction documentation and construction.
It has given Marcus a practical understanding of not only how to design a home, but how to design one that can be approved, costed and built.

Making the most of the home you already have
Renovating an existing home presents a very different set of challenges to designing on a vacant block.
Existing structures, site constraints, planning controls, neighbouring properties, orientation, construction methods and budget all influence what is possible.
Our role is to identify the opportunities within those constraints.
That may involve adding a second storey, extending the ground floor, opening the home to the garden, improving natural light or completely reorganising the existing floor plan.
Sometimes the best solution isn't necessarily a larger home — it's a better-designed one.
DESIGN WITH APPROVAL AND CONSTRUCTION IN MIND
A successful renovation needs to work on more than just paper.
From the beginning of a project, we consider the likely DA or CDC approval pathway, construction implications and project budget alongside the design.
Where appropriate, we encourage early input from builders and other consultants so that important decisions can be tested before the project progresses too far.
This practical approach helps create homes that are not only well designed, but realistic to approve and build.
DA & CDC EXPERIENCE
Navigating the approval process is an important part of any major renovation.
BettsWhite has extensive experience preparing residential projects for both Development Application (DA) and Complying Development Certificate (CDC) approval pathways across NSW.
Early in the design process, we investigate the planning controls affecting the property and determine the most appropriate approval strategy.
Where a project can qualify for CDC, this can provide a significantly more streamlined approval pathway. Where a DA is required, the design is developed with the relevant Council controls and site constraints in mind.
FROM CONCEPT TO CONSTRUCTION
We can assist throughout the complete renovation process, including:

QUALIFICATIONS
Marcus holds a Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Design in Architecture from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), together with a Diploma of Architectural Technology from Ultimo TAFE.
Combined with two decades of practical residential experience, this provides the foundation for Bettswhite's approach to renovation design — considered, practical and focused on getting projects built.
